Dr Jemma Barton

Jemma is the Programme Lead for Safety and Mortality at Aqua. Jemma has led the development of a suite of offers that support organisations in their implementation of PSIRF, this includes tailored programmes on system-based approaches to learning, compassionate engagement, and supportive oversight. More recently Jemma has led the development of a train-the-trainer approach to compassionate engagement, in order to support organisational capability building. 

Jemma has worked across several NHS provider and commissioner organisations for over 20 years, in leadership roles which focused on patient safety and improvement. Through these roles, Jemma has supported Trusts to implement and embed the principles of a systems-based approach to learning. In previous NHS roles, Jemma has led many systems-focused learning responses and investigations. A number of these investigations have led to actions and improvements at both local and national levels. 

Jemma has a Professional Doctorate in Patient Safety and the focus of the research was the exploration and impact of the implementation of the Duty of Candour.
