 Norman Williams was professor of surgery at Barts and The London, Queen Mary’s School of Medicine and Dentistry, honorary consultant surgeon at Barts and The London (1986-2016) and director of the National Centre for Bowel Research and Surgical Innovation (2012-2016). He was senior clinical advisor to the Secretary of State for Health (2015-18) and is now chairman of the National Clinical Improvement Programme (NCIP), a non-executive director of St George’s FT, a board member of the Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN) and President of Bowel & Cancer Research. 

From 2011-14 he was president of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and recently chaired the Rapid Review of Gross Negligence Manslaughter in Healthcare. In 2016 he led an independent commission on Education and Training for Patient Safety for Health Education England.

He was knighted for services to surgery in the 2015 New Year’s Honours List.
