Merry Varney is a solicitor and partner in the Human Rights Department at Leigh Day. She acts in a wide variety of matters concerning children, patients and vulnerable adults and with her team, represents clients in Coroners Courts, the Court of Protection, judicial review challenges and claims for damages under the Human Rights Act 1998.

Merry acted for the family of Nicholas Jones, who died an avoidable death in an NHS hospital in December 2014. Almost three years after his death the Coroner found Nick’s death was contributed to by neglect.

Merry also acted for David Tracey who secured the landmark Court of Appeal ruling that the human right to respect for one’s private life requires healthcare professionals to inform and consult a patient regarding any decision to withhold resuscitation unless there are convincing reasons not to.
