Melanie Leahy is an electronic engineer with specialist training of ultrasonic medical equipment used in hospital and military applications. Life changed suddenly for Melanie when her 20-year-old son, Matthew Leahy, died within seven days of admission to the Linden Centre, a psychiatric hospital in Essex. Multiple failings and missed opportunities in his care came to light. Melanie has campaigned tirelessly since her son’s death to try to truly understand what happened on the ward and to push for recommendations made after Matthew’s death to be implemented for safety of others.

Numerous investigations, police reviews, more deaths, lack of accountability and unanswered questions have led her to push for a public inquiry into her son’s death. Currently this is work in progress. As is, a health and safety investigation into the deaths of another 24 patients who died by the same means as her son, dating as far back as 2004.
