Dr Jennifer McGaughey is a senior lecturer (education) with extensive experience in acute and critical care nursing. She is the pathway lead for the critical care nursing short course and the MSc in acute and critical care. Her programme of research focuses on the recognition and management of patient deterioration in acute hospital wards. Funded research has focused on the impact of early warning systems and critical care education on the success of Rapid Response System interventions and family perceptions of deterioration and escalation of care. She maintains national and international collaborations in critical care through scientific and committee membership on the European federation of Critical Care Nurses, the British Association of Critical Care Nurses, the Critical Care Nurse Education Review Forum and the Critical Care Doctoral European Nurses Group. Her methodological expertise includes systematic reviews, co-design and realist or process evaluation. Current research involvement focuses on the feasibility testing of protocols/interventions to improve sleep, dysphasia and delirium in ICU and patient and family escalation of care.
